Perfect for young people who are fascinated by airports and airplanes, Aviation Teen Start-Up provides a great opportunity for rich learning in science, technology and engineering. The innovation competition, for 11-to 16-year-olds, is being held on the 11th and 12th of July at the Canberra Airport. With a focus on aviation and aerospace innovation, a highlight of the competition is the behind-the-scenes tour of Canberra Airport.

Fifty students will have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes, navigating their way through the terminal, visiting the international lounge, watching demonstrations, and exploring back-of-house functions such as the loading dock, and airport infrastructure, including the generators and water supplies.

Over the two days, students will work together in teams to come up with an idea for a product or service that they believe provides a solution to an aviation-related problem their generation will face in the future. The event concludes with the students pitching their concepts to a panel of judges.

Students will look at the problems and opportunities involved in the aviation and aerospace industries, tackling both practical and big-picture problems. These will include logistics, transportation, energy, education and training, sustainability, infrastructure, safety and security, emergency response, customer experience, accessibility, communication and data as well as the movement of people and things.

This annual event is delivered as a partnership between Canberra Airport and local innovation consultancy, Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre (Lighthouse).

“Each of our Teen Start-Up programs will focus on learning skills that will enable our young people to live and work effectively in the 21st Century,” says Anna Pino, CEO of Lighthouse.

“With plenty of hands-on activities, guest speakers and a behind-the-scenes tour of the airport, our students are introduced to skills like creativity, problem solving and critical thinking in an exciting, interactive way.”
